Today we’re profiling the breakout director and “No” Budget film guru Robert Rodríguez.
Below is a collection of his instructional videos on how to create No to Low Budgeted Films.

Rodríguez grew up shooting action and horror short films on video, and editing on two VCRs. Finally, in the fall of 1990, his entry in a local film contest earned him a spot in the university’s film program where he made the award-winning 16 mm short, “Bedhead”. The film chronicles the amusing misadventures of a young girl whose older brother sports an incredibly tangled mess of hair that she cannot tolerate. The rest of the short film is a humorous account of how the young girl tries to fix her brother’s follicle monstrosity when she discovers her telekinetic abilities. Even at this early stage, Rodríguez’s trademark style began to emerge: quick cuts, intense zooms, and fast camera movements deployed with a sense of humor that offsets the action.

This short film attracted enough attention to encourage him to seriously attempt a career as a filmmaker. He went on to shoot the action flick El Mariachi in Spanish. El Mariachi, which was shot for around $7,000 with money partially raised by participating in medical research studies, won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 1992. The film, originally intended for the Spanish-language low-budget home-video market, was “cleaned up” with several hundred thousand dollars before being distributed by Columbia Pictures in the United States, still being promoted as “the movie made for $7,000″. Rodríguez described his experiences making the film in his book Rebel Without a Crew. The book and film inspired legions of hopeful filmmakers to pick up cameras and make no-budget movies. The film and the book are widely considered important touchstones of the independent film movement of the 1990s.

You will get a premiere weekend date where we will pay you 20 cents for every free individual viewing of your movie on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Have your friends and family help you get paid for your efforts and have them watch your film during the premiere period. After your premiere date we will continue to pay you for free viewings at a lower rate for as long as you choose for up to 1 year.
Older projects that have been previously released will receive 10 cents per free viewing.
This is the biggest payout ever for free viewing of independent movies anywhere online and we at Hustlefilms believe that this is the start of a new revolution in distributing films in the future.
Twitter and Facebook the world about your premiere! You will receive a better response if you let them know that they can view your film for free. Also encourage them to watch your movie during the premiere period to help you get the best return possible.

Content Parameters:

Movies, Short films, Documentaries and Videos of Interest must be 20 minutes or longer to qualify for the 20 cents per viewing during the premiere weekend. Content that is shorter than 20 minutes will be paid 10 cents per view.
You may submit a trailer or your full content through an email link to armand@HustleFilms.com for review – No DVD’s or VHS tapes will be accepted.
Content can be viewed at film festivals first but if it had a wide release (or DVD release) then it only qualifies for the 10 cents per viewing during the premiere weekend.
Online audiences pay nothing to view your content.
You pick your weekend Premiere date between now and June 1, 2010. If there 3 premieres on that weekend you will be notified to pick another date.
A premiere weekend consist of Friday, Saturday & Sunday. You will be paid 20 cents for every new movie viewing per day up to 500 views. Over 500 new views per day during the premiere weekend will be paid at a rate of 5 cents per view. After your premiere weekend you will be paid 1 cent per view of your content for as long as you like your movie content to stay on our website up to one year.
You are allowed to sell merchandising to promote your movie on our site as well (Posters, T-Shirts, etc). We require a 30% revenue share of all merchandising.
Your contract will be non-exclusive. You will be able to show your content on any platform you like during and after the Weekend Premiere. It will be beneficial to narrow your viewers to Hustlefilms.com to make the most money possible within a short amount of time.
No instructional videos will be accepted. Only Drama, Comedy and Action is acceptable as content.
Submissions subject to review and may not fit our requirements.
Your content viewing will be counted with Google Analytics to assure proper payment.
Payments for content viewing are made within 30 day intervals. Payments are through PayPal.com
You must provide an online movie poster and separate picture Header picture to promote your Premiere.
Your movie, short film or video must be uploaded to a video hosting site. We will embed the video onto our site. (Phanfare, Brightcove, Dailymotion, Youtube and Embedr.com is permitted).

Glamor…That’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of entertainment promoters. They rub shoulders with DJ’s, club owners and local celebrities all while making a better living than the rest of us. What most of us don’t know is that there is a lot of work, dedication and nerves of steel behind this image. I don’t need to explain the hard work and dedication because we can imagine all the phone calls to guest lists and getting on club calendars but the charisma is the one thing most people don’t pay attention to. Putting your money, reputation and ass on the line to make everything go off without a hitch is not only hard work but charisma.
Another thing most of us don’t know is that almost all promoters try to keep a day job as well but they have more freedom of job choices. In these economic times they realize that it’s not considered very smart to rely on one revenue stream even if they are successful.
If your going to be a successful club party promoter, take some tips from Squidoo.com;

Learn Everyone’s Name:
Sounds kind of stupid but remember this, people really feel special when you know their name…especially when you just met them or when you’ve only met them once. Everyone likes to feel important and knowing people’s name makes them feel important. It’s not always easy to remember everyone’s name when you meet them (especially if you’ve been doing a lot of partying that night) but try your best to work at this…it’ll only benefit you.

Treat All The People On Your List Like VIP’s
Don’t just take care of your friends or people that are deemed “cool”. Try to take care of everyone that comes to your party or to the club on your list, as a VIP…and there are a million little things you can do to make people feel like a VIP. Get them drinks on your tab. Introduce them to other people (especially those of the opposite sex). Let them into your “VIP section” or bring them to your personal table to party… anything you can do to show that you appreciate their business will go along way in making them feel VIP, and that will make them extremely loyal to you.

Remember having loyal customers is a huge part of this business and it’s the key factor in separating the fly-by-night promoters, and the serious people that are in it to make the big money.

Hire A Photographer:
When you have a photographer going around your party, it makes people think it’s a more VIP party. They see people getting their picture taken and they associate it with paparazzi and famous people…so they feel more VIP and that makes them want to tell their friends and come to your next party. (try it out and see for yourself)

If you have a blog or website, post those pictures. People love to see pictures of themselves and their friends online. When their picture is posted on a website, people almost feel “famous”. Having lots of pictures on your site will allow you to get lots of traffic to your site just by people wanting to see the pictures from that night before. While they are there, they can sign up for your guest list, learn about your other parties or buy tickets to your next upcoming events.

Have the photographer hand out cards to the people saying “if you want to view the pictures from tonight, go to abcwebsite”. This way people have a way to find their pictures (and your site) easily.

If you want to take it a step further to help keep things exciting and people coming back each week, you can give away prizes (t-shirts, food, drinks) based on in-game contests such as the “box-game”, “last man standing pools”, final scores, etc.

Show us what your fans already know. Your a new hot music video producer!
With the advent of affordable but powerful computer programs and HD cameras, a new generation of video producers has cropped up and want musicians to know they are ready for them. These producers can deliver the same hot videos you see on MTV and VH1 at a fraction of the cost the big name production houses charge.

This contest will help promote these music video producers to a whole range of artists who want to show their talent in video. If your a amateur music video producer and would like to show the world what you can do, you can submit a video link of your work (via, YouTube or other video sources) with information about yourself and the video(s) you produced. You can also submit a picture by email.
The submission fee is $15.00.
This contest is only open to individual producers and not to established video production houses.
All contestants videos will be voted on by their fans and HustleFilms website users. 5 contestants with the highest votes will be listed all year as HustleFilms.com “Hottest Music Video Producers” with links to their videos and contact information. All the contestants video and information will be listed for the duration of the contest round. Each round will be voted on for at least one week and their will be three rounds all together.
Submissions are from July 22 to August 15th.
Videos and information will be posted immediately. Winners will be announced on August 30th!
